This refers to the article ‘When will Pakistan’s Aam Aadmi moment come’ (February 13) by Ayaz Amir. While it is an excellent article, the point is: are conditions ripe in Pakistan to replicate the Indian example? The answer is a big no.
Soon after independence, India abolished the feudal system. Emancipated from the clutches of feudal lords, the masses were free to decide whom to vote. On the other hand, the rural population in Pakistan votes according to the dictates of feudal lords. Second, Pakistan is at least 50 years behind India in terms of political awareness. Another aspect is that Indian rulers have been relatively honest and sincere to their nation. In Pakistan, elections is a big game and only the rich elite can become part of the system while the common man is detested and abhorred by corrupt rulers. Parliament in Pakistan is dominated by feudals, so there is no possibility of carrying out land reforms.
