LAHORE:Two electricity workers were electrocuted during the performance of their duties on Tuesday.
In the first incident, lineman M Shafiq of Walton Sub-Division 5th Circle Lesco was electrocuted during the performance of his duty while in the second mishap, lineman Shabbir Ahmad of Bhabhara Sub-Division Bhalwal Fesco also received electric shock and died on Tuesday. A large number of workers and management attended the funeral of Shafiq. Working class observed a protest day over the rising accidents of death of line staff members in the monsoon season due to serious shortage of the line staff as compared to rising quantum of electricity work. They said that there is a ban on the recruitment of line and field staff for the last five years. All Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Workers Union has demanded the government fill up the almost 50% vacant posts of line staff to ease the heavy workload of the line staff and ensure them safe working conditions. Khurshid Ahmed, veteran trade union leader urged the workers to refuse to work in case of unsafe working conditions and save their lives and health.
