Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has approached the Sindh High Court (SHC), seeking the immediate holding of local bodies elections in the province.
In a constitutional petition filed in the court on Monday, it was stated that the local bodies’ governments in Sindh had completed their terms in August 2020, while the provincial government department was bound to hold new elections within 120 days. “Despite the passage of one year, the local bodies elections have not been held,” the petition said.
PTI Karachi president and MPA Khurram Sher Zaman said his party had filed a constitutional petition in the SHC to hold the local bodies elections as soon as possible under Article 140A of the Constitution of Pakistan. “Under Article 140A, the provincial governments are required to hold local elections within 120 days.” The PTI leader said that the main reason for the PPP’s delay in the LG elections was the fear of the PTI winning.
