KMC staff told to perform rainwater drainage duty diligently
Karachi Administrator Laeeq Ahmed visited the city immediately after monsoon rain and inspected the rainwater drainage process on Wednesday.
He also checked on the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) personnel deployed in different areas, and drainage machinery and pumps.
The administrator gave necessary instructions to the officers in charge of drainage works and asked them to perform their duties diligently so that the citizens could be kept safe from difficulties in the rainy season.
He also spoke to Managing Director Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) Asadullah Khan about a sewerage line on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road and said it was a very important area where traffic pressure was very high, so the issue should be resolved as soon as possible.
The administrator said that draining pumps had been delivered to the underpasses and other low-lying areas of the city for immediate drainage of rainwater and this process was being monitored continuously so that no obstruction was created anywhere.
He said a contingency plan had also been prepared for the monsoon season. He directed the officers to pay special attention to the underpasses where two pumps had already been delivered. "It is the main responsibility of the local bodies to facilitate the citizens in the rainy season for which all necessary steps are being taken," Ahmed added.
He hoped that the KWSB would address the issue of sewerage lines in different areas on a priority basis as these issues became more serious during the monsoons and citizens faced difficulties. "Roads are also damaged due to stagnant sewage and rainwater and there is a possibility of traffic accidents, so all agencies should work together to fulfil their responsibilities," he said.
Ahmed said that according to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, there would be more rains than usual this year, the authorities had to be prepared to deal with any situation accordingly.
