The Academic Council of the University of Karachi on Thursday unanimously approved the continuation of its conventional degree programs, and formed a committee for the phase-wise implementation of the two-year associate degree program and four-year BS program proposed by the Higher Education Commission.

The members of the KU Academic Council also decided to defer the two-year associate degree program till June 2022. The Academic Council met at the Arts Auditorium, with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi in the chair.

The decision of the restoration of the traditional bachelor’s and master’s programs was taken in light of the recommendations of the committee, which was headed by Prof Dr Jamil H. Kazmi.

Meanwhile, the Academic Council constituted a committee which would be chaired by Dean Faculty of Education Prof Dr Nasir Sulman regarding the phase-wise implementation of two-year associate degree and four-year BS programs with the consultation of heads of various departments of the university.

The committee comprises Prof Dr Anila Amber Malik, Prof Dr Intikhab Ulfat, Prof Dr Samina Saeed, Prof Dr Maqsood Ali Ansari, Prof Dr Taseer Ahmed Khan and Prof Dr Nadeem Mahmood.

It would share its recommendations with the members of the Academic Council to formalise the curriculum for the HEC-proposed degree programs. All the members of the Academic Council strongly condemned the statement issued by a group of college teachers in which they accused VC Prof Iraqi of deliberately not announcing admissions in BA, BSc, BCom, and MA programs in colleges.

The Academic Council observed that decisions were taken in light of HEC policies, and the University of Karachi was waiting for clarification from the HEC on various matters.
