SWABI: The 22nd anniversary of the martyrdom of Capt Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed (Nishan-e-Haider), who is known as a hero of Kargil, was observed here on Monday.
Capt Karnal Sher Khan had emerged as the symbol of courage and bravery during the Kargil War and defended his strategic posts at the peaks of Kargil’s snow-capped mountains. He had inflicted heavy losses on the enemy while forcing his way into their camp at an altitude of 17,000 feet in Gultary area.
On July 5, 1999, Indians, with the help of two battalions, managed to capture some portion of one of his posts. Despite facing all odds, he launched a counter-attack and re-captured the lost post and fought bravery till he embraced martyrdom.
Capt Karnal Sher Khan laid down his life for the motherland in the Kargil War and his bravery was even praised by the officials of the Indian army because he entered their camp and fought courageously. A contingent presented guard of honour and a floral wreath was placed on his grave. Sikandar Sher, his brother, said that they were proud of his martyrdom for the country.
