KARACHI: The opening ceremony of the free athletics training and coaching camp at Athletic Fitness School (AFS) was held at Hockey Club of Pakistan here the other day.

Muhammad Junaid, Director Administration, Abdul Sattar Hockey Stadium, was the chief guest on the occasion.

The AFS is most prestigious athletics center in the country, having produced a number of national and international athletes under the leadership of former athlete and coach Muhammad Talib.

The AFS school has been organising summer coaching and training for school children and other athletes for decades. This is the 39th edition.

On this occasion, Talib highlighted the importance of sporting activities and spoke about how helpful the athletics exercises are in other sports disciplines, including cricket, football, hockey, swimming, badminton, table tennis, and lawn tennis.

He said that importance of athletics exercise has increased because of viral diseases. If the immune system is strong, people will be able to survive such epidemics as Covid-19, he added.

He said that AFS has provided free services to all interested sportsmen and sportswomen.

Talib asked parents and schools to send youngsters to learn the basics of athletics during the one-month camp. More than 80 participants, including 35 girls, joined the camp on the very first day.
