Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life for Pakistan: PLF

MULTAN: Lawyers on Wednesday paid rich tribute to former premier Benazir Bhutto for sacrificing her life for the betterment of Pakistan and said she had mesmerised the people by her role in the Movement for Restoration of Democracy and signing the Charter of Democracy.
These views were expressed at a meeting organised by People’s Lawyers Forum (PLF) South Punjab at Multan District Bar and chaired by Habibullah Shakir on Wednesday.
The participants criticised the Nawaz-Modi meeting in Lahore and said Modi’s visited was aimed at protecting India’s trade route instead of addressing core issues including Kashmir.
Shakir, who is the PLF South Punjab chairman, said Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif were different in many ways, as she had accepted NRO and returned back to Pakistan to sacrifice her life, while Nawaz accepted the NRO to leave for Saudi Arabia.
He said Nawaz raised the slogan of Punjabi chauvinism against the Centre in 1989 and alleged that Punjab was currently interfering in Sindh affairs. He opined that situation would further flare up sense of deprivation among smaller provinces against Punjab. The political forces in Sindh had been isolated and the same would be exercised in Punjab soon, he added.
Shakir opined that provinces were autonomous after the passage of 18th Amendment and the law and order situation was purely a provincial matter.
He said Benazir Bhutto had sacrificed her life for protecting democratic values and she was against the interference into provincial matters. “She fought for the restoration of democracy so bravely that the nation will remember her efforts for a long time.”
Mirza Aziz Akbar Baig said the present democratic setup was a result of political struggle of Benazir who opposed the traditional politics, empowered the poor and gave importance to common people.
Former MNA Nafees Ansari said Benazir, like other members of her family, was killed while fighting against the enemies of Pakistan. She was the lone voice of Federation and several political parties emerged at provincial level after her assassination.
Other PLF office bearers - Zawar Hussein Qureshi, Nasheed Arif Gondal and Sheikh Ghias-ul-Haq the people were the best judge to evaluate and only Parliament could interpret the Constitution. They condemned the alleged interference in Sindh affairs, describing it unconstitutional and unjustified.
Work on Multan Metro depot from today

MULTAN: The Multan Development Authority has purchased 20 acres of land near Bahauddin Zakariya University to establish a Metro bus depot.
MDA Additional DG Altaf Hussein said Rs 200.6 million had been spent for purchasing the land and the construction work would start from Thursday (today). The administration had taken over the possession, he added.
