A neglected city
The Sindh government recently presented the provincial budget for the financial year 2021-2022. It was disappointing to see that it has allocated only Rs8 million for various development projects in Karachi. During the last 12 years, no meaningful development work has been carried out in the city. Also, no work has been carried out for the city’s maintenance. Karachi faces a host of critical issues. There is an acute shortage of water in the city, and the public transport system is practically non-existent. Roads are in bad shape, and the entire city is covered in piles of garbage. Rising street crimes hint at the city’s worsening law and order. The education sector remains neglected.
Billions of rupees in provincial taxes and levies are collected each year. However, we don’t know how that money is being used for development. Karachi needs the immediate attention of the relevant authorities who must deal with its numerous problems.
