Unsatisfactory response
Recently, PTI MNA Noor Alam Khan delivered a fiery speech in the National Assembly and blamed his own government for the unprecedented hike in the prices of electricity and for prolonged power outages across the country. Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar, however, held the previous governments of the PPP and the PML-N responsible for the current energy shortfall. The minister, who barely concealed his anger, linked the existing problem of unscheduled loadshedding to what he called the ‘most expensive power agreements’ signed by the previous governments with different companies or organisations. His comments have created confusion among people. What has been the PTI-led government done during the last three years? What happened to our claims of economic growth? Doesn’t Prime Minister Imran Khan claim that the country has witnessed economic growth and that his government will soon pull the country out of the existing crises including rising inflation, high power tariff, inadequate healthcare, etc? The main reasons for the failure of the government to provide better life amenities to the people of Pakistan are rampant corruption, mismanagement and poor governance. Had the government succeeded in overcoming corruption and corrupt practices in the country, the situation would have been quite different today. Instead of sticking to the old habit of blaming the rival parties, the minister should have mentioned the steps that the current government has taken to mitigate public woes. This culture of blame game may widen the gap between the treasury and opposition benches.
It is time the government did away with the politics of blame game and paid attention to the problems of the people. It needs to take drastic measures to resolve these problems. This approach will definitely go a long way in improving the ruling party’s image among people and will also help it break free from the politics of confrontation – which is inimical to the progress and prosperity of the country.
