LAHORE
Despite district coordination officer's orders, town officials of weekly makeshift markets failed to ensure the availability of most vegetables at fixed rates.
However, missing vegetables were openly sold at much higher rates outside makeshift markets by vendors who used to do business on market premises every week, which exposes the seriousness of government officials about improvement of the bazaars. This is a routine practice of government officials for the weekly makeshift markets as they believe that due to the markets they even cannot avail weekly off from work and are compelled to work.
On the other hand they also blamed that the DCO office representative and market committee officials fixed wrong prices of vegetables at wholesale level which leads to unavailability of a number of vegetables every week. The vendors due to wrong price fixation refused to sell some of vegetables in makeshift markets premises and sold outside. They said that strict action could not be taken against the vendors as they would stop selling outside the markets and artificial shortage would occur.
