A clash between two student groups took place at the Punjab University on Friday. After the clash students and sympathizers of both the parties separately disrupted traffic on different roads and raised slogans against each other.
According to details, some activists of Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) allegedly thrashed a Pashtun student Alamgir at the varsity’s Gender Studies Department, New Campus on Friday.
This instigated the other group whose members came and tortured and injured IJT activists Tanzeel and Junaid. A large number of Pashtun students also ‘visited’ PU Hostel No 1 and ransacked rooms of the boarding students associated with the IJT.
Afterwards they came on the road and blocked the traffic for quite some time creating problems for commuters on Canal Road and many adjacent roads. However, they left when the police arrived.
In the evening a large number of the IJT activists gathered at New Campus and chanting slogans against hooliganism by the Pashtun students and ‘silence’ of the PU administration. They also blocked traffic for some time.
In a statement the IJT spokesperson said the PU administration instead of providing medical treatment to their six injured fellows handed them to the police. He accused the PU administration of disturbing peaceful environment of the varsity by involving outsiders.
However, a PU spokesperson rejected Jamiat’s allegations and said indiscriminate action would be taken against those involved in Friday’s incident. He said the administration would not tolerate any move to disturb peaceful atmosphere of the varsity. No one from the either student group was available for comments till filing of the story.
