The lawmakers of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday submitted a resolution in the Sindh Assembly proposing a further extension of four months in the special anti-terror policing powers of Rangers stationed in Karachi.

The resolution submitted in secretariat of Sindh Assembly was co-signed by two PTI MPAs, Dr Seema Zia and Khurrum Sher Zaman.

The draft of the resolution states: “This house recommends the Government of Sindh to extend special powers to Rangers for period of four months. Rangers have been successful in maintaining law and order and in capturing those involved in corruption. For the future of Sindh and betterment of citizens, we strongly recommend that Rangers’ stay be extended to complete the task.”

Later while talking to the media after submitting the resolution, Khurrum Sher Zaman said in case there would be no further extension in the special anti-terror powers of Sindh Rangers, then the people of the province would be under the impression that the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) government in Sindh was not serious at all about the affairs pertaining to law and order.

He said the Rangers had always played an important role in maintaining peace in the city and their stay should be extended so its personnel could continue their crackdown on extortion of money, terrorism, and other crimes.

Dr Seema Zia said the Rangers had played an important role in the maintenance of law and order in the province, after the Sindh Police failed on this front. She said the PTI had approached other political parties with representation in the Sindh Assembly to support its resolution for extending the special policing powers of Rangers.

It is worth mentioning that the Sindh Assembly is likely to convene on December 10, where the provincial government is expected to take up the matter of the possibility of endorsing the special anti-terror policing powers to Rangers.
