The management committee of PMDC has decided to issue full registration to Cuban graduates for one year, subject to provision of an affidavit, says a press release issued Tuesday by the Ministry of Health Services.
A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting of the PMDC management committee on Tuesday. During the meeting, the pending issue of full registration of over 900 Cuban medical graduates was considered. The issue was discussed in detail, with the chairman and executive director of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) also pleading for full registration of the graduates.
The committee, after examining complete record of the case, personally hearing the Cuban graduates and reviewing various regulatory implications, decided in favour of conditional registration, subject to submission of an affidavit. The Cuban graduates will have to accept a one-year registration with PMDC. Renewal of PMDC registration will be subjected to the condition that they will not do independent private practice during this one year, and that they will submit a certificate of competence by a specialist doctor registered with PMDC under whom they would have worked during the one-year period.
The meeting decided that after receipt of competence report by applicants/specialists as per the affidavit, PMDC would issue full registration to Cuban graduates for five years.
Meanwhile, Cuban graduates are stated to have welcomed the decision, following which the protesting graduates dispersed peacefully.
