It is unfortunate that we rank fifth in the world in terms of the number of unresolved cases of violence against journalists. According to a report released by the Pakistan Press Foundation (PPF), at least 71 journalists and media workers have lost their lives since 2001. Of these, 47 were deliberately targeted and murdered for practising their profession, while others were killed while covering dangerous assignments.
The United Nations marked November 2 as the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists. The editorial, ‘Justice for journalists’ (November 2) rightly points out that: “The day serves to remind us of unresolved crimes against journalists....draws attention to unsolved cases where violence has been used against journalists who are simply exercising their freedom of expression and duty of reporting.”
