Islamabad: A symposium showcasing research on medical imaging technology, conducted by undergraduate students of the Medical Image Processing Research Group (MIPRG), a component of the Electrical Engineering Department of Comsats Institute of Information Technology, was held here.
The cutting-edge research, normally expected from PhD level students, focuses on finding mechanisms to reduce the time required for a typical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan from 45 minutes to five or six minutes, without loss in quality. Eleven CIIT undergraduate students had also presented their research in Edinburgh earlier this month in the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology(1st-3rd October 2015).
Dr. Hammad Omer, Head of the Medical Image Processing Research Group at CIIT, provided an overview of the technological advances in the field of MRI and explained how the students’ research goal was optimised for an efficient image reconstruction in MRI. He also touched upon CIIT’s collaborations with international universities leading in medical imaging in Germany, Malaysia, UK and USA. After this, the students presented highlights of their research and the applications of this research in Medical Imaging.
Major-General Shamrez Khan, Commandant Armed Forces Institute of Radiology & Imaging (AFIRI), who was also the chief guest on the occasion, gave a presentation on Cardiac Imaging. Maj-Gen Khan said, “This is my first visit to CIIT and I am very impressed by the beautiful campus, the library and the presentations made by the students.”
In his vote of thanks, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Shahid A. Khan, said, “I am proud of the research of my undergraduate students as this kind of work normally is expected at the PhD level.”
The event attracted a number of enthusiastic participants from many leading universities in Pakistan.
