The fourth death anniversary of Begum Nusrat Bhutto, former chairperson of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and wife of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, would be observed today.
The day will start with Quran Khawani in Garhi Khuda Bux where PPP leaders and parliamentarians along with workers would pray for her and lay floral wreaths on her grave.
Sindh Senior Minister of Information and Education Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, reminiscing about Bhutto’s contribution, said she was the one who laid the foundation of the PPP women’s wing and always lived with the workers and won their hearts. He said Bhutto gave unforgettable sacrifices for the cause of democracy in the country.
“Her husband Zulfikar Ali Bhutto was hanged and then her sons Shahnawaz Bhutto and Mir Murtuza Bhutto and her daughter Shaheed Benazir Bhutto were murdered, which made her life full of tragedies.”
Khuhro said she was born in 1929 in Isfahan, Iran. “Before migrating to Pakistan, she was educated at the University of Isfahan where she obtained a bachelor’s of arts in Humanities in 1950.”
He said that after returning to Pakistan in the late 1980s, she served two terms as a member of the National Assembly from the constituency of Larkana.
“Begum Nusrat Bhutto rose to political prominence in the late 1970s and early 1980s when she led protests and demonstrations against military dictatorships and she is remembered for her contribution to the empowerment of women and advocating for democracy in Pakistan.”
The minister said that after the overthrow of the Bhutto government by Gen Ziaul Haq on July 5, 1977, she led the party and fought for her husband’s life.
“As the only living head of the family, she took up the leadership of the party and also dealt with the cases in courts. However, she had to endure the shock of Bhutto’s execution on April 4, 1979. “We pay tribute to her sacrifices which she rendered for the country.”
