The Sindh government has announced its intent to move the Supreme Court on Monday against the Sindh High Court's orders for changes in delimitations conducted for the upcoming local bodies elections.
An announcement in this regard was made by Sindh LG Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah after a meeting at the commissioner's office on Saturday.
"We appreciate the positive aspects of the SHC’s decision regarding delimitations, but we have reservations over certain matters for which we will move the apex court on Monday," he said, adding that the government would be taking up the case to ensure that the polls could be conducted on schedule.
“We remain firm on our commitment to hold local government elections on time. However, there are some unresolved matters which could result in unwanted delays. That is why we will request the apex court on Monday to direct the subordinate courts to ensure that there are no delays in the election schedule,” said Shah.
He assured the government would cooperate fully with the Election Commission of Pakistan to ensure the polls were conducted in a transparent, free and peaceful manner.
Sanitation efforts
The meeting at the commissioner's office was over cleanliness efforts in the city and Shah told newsmen that discussions were held over possible outsourcing of sanitation operations of certain district municipal corporations (DMCs) to private sector companies.
He said the plan was aimed only at providing relief to the masses, adding that the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board had set March 15, 2016 to fully take over garbage disposal and management affairs in all districts of Karachi.
