The deputy inspector general (DIG) of South Zone, Sharjeel Kharal, on Sunday ordered an inquiry against personnel of the Eidgah police station after a video apparently shows that policemen are looting rations from shopkeepers and pushcart vendors.

The video, which is making the rounds on social media, apparently shows that the police personnel in a mobile van of the Eidgah police station are looting rations, fruits and vegetables from shops and pushcarts in the area.

After the video went viral on the social media, the DIG South took notice of the incident and ordered District City SSP Muqaddas Haider to initiate an inquiry.

43 caught

As they tried to violate the government’s ban on intercity transport as a measure to combat the novel coronavirus, 43 people, including two children, were detained by police on Sunday for attempting to leave Karachi for Mansehra.

The arrests were made by the Civil Lines police after they intercepted a truck near Fawara Chowk in the Artillery Maidan area. As the truck was searched, 43 people, including two children were found inside.

Police said they caught the people red-handed as they were trying to leave the city for their hometown. Police added that the truck driver had received Rs3,000 from each passenger to transport them to Mansehra.

The detained people told the police that they used to work in Karachi but since the lockdown was imposed, they had no work to do in the city.

They said it was due to this, they wanted to return to their hometown when police intercepted the truck and took them into custody. No case has been registered while further investigations was under way.
