PIA, once a source of pride for our nation, is today in the doldrums. While the outgoing chairman must be credited for his partially implemented plan of cleansing the airline of fake degree holders and his decision to move the main operational base to Islamabad, he failed to curtail losses. He, like his predecessors, lacked a professional team, well versed in commercial aviation. Given the excessive political and bureaucratic interference, PIA must be privatized or else shut down. PIA needs a highly qualified and experienced CEO, with ultimate authority over hiring and firing decisions.
