The Muttahida Qaumi Movement's Rabita Committee on Tuesday condemned raids at houses and arrests of 11 party workers over the past two days.
President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif were requested to take notice of the workers victimisation under the guise of the operation. It called for releasing the arrested workers immediately.
Terming the acts as ‘unwarranted’ and ‘illegal’ the committee in a statement observed that a conspiracy against the MQM was being hatched, as had been done in the past.
“Forty MQM workers had been extra-judicially killed, whereas thousands have been arrested and dozens have fallen victim to enforced disappearances since the start of the operation in 2013,” the statement read. The committee complained law enforcement agencies personnel, dressed in plainclothes, arrested several MQM workers in the past two days and shifted them to unknown locations.
The statement maintained that a worker of Unit 96, Malir was arrested in an illegal raid conducted at his house, whereas worker of Unit UC-4 Mehmoodabad, Shahnawaz, son of Ghayasuddin, was also arrested from his home.
Two more activits of the Unit 67-C, Sector Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Ali Lodhi and Arif Hussain, had also been arrested from their homes whereas Muhammad Ali Akbar, a worker of Unit 173, Sector North Nazimabad was also arrested following a raid on his home.
Wasim Qamar Ali, Faisal Nadeem, Irshad Bukhari, Abdul Hameed, Shahood Ansari and Shakeel were also claimed to have been arrested following raids on their homes situated in Korangi, Orangi Town, Shah Faisal Colony and PIB Colony sectors respectively. The committee members further observed that arrested workers were being subjected to intense torture which had put their lives at risk of severe injuries.
