Training session: Teachers asked to learn new teaching methods
ABBOTTABAD: Speakers at a training session here on Sunday asked the teachers to get equipped with modern teaching skills to impart quality education to students.
They were speaking at a one-day training session for teachers titled “Modern Teaching Technologies in the Light of Educational Psychology.” The Educate Publications had organised the session.
Over 200 male and female teachers from more than 34 schools and colleges attended the daylong session chaired by Hazara Commissioner Syed Zaheerul Islam. Motivational speaker, Dr Rashid Mahmood, conducted the training.
The commissioner in his brief address said that teachers should be dedicated to imparting education to students. He added that a teacher without passion cannot succeed. “Only passion can arouse the interest of the students,” he said and asked the teachers to play a key role in the society’s growth, as they helped to shape the mindset of the nation.
The official said teachers were an extremely important segment of any society for a number of reasons and their role in society was both significant and valuable. The teachers were the people who educated the youth of society who in turn became the leaders of the next generation of people, he said.
Dr Rashid Mahmood in his presentation said that educational psychology seeks to understand how students learn and how teachers developed curriculum. He stressed the need for focusing on the educational triangle, including student, teacher and parents, as teachers not only concentrated on the students but also focused on parents as well.
The speaker maintained that the media has an important role in the grooming of children. He said that inductive and deductive were two types of teaching methods.
Dr Rashid said a teacher should have subject command as well as social genius and communication skills. He added that basic teaching skills included good subject command and a teacher must use a guide book and update his or her knowledge besides using inspiring techniques. Dr Rashid also spoke about class management, subject preparation, parents dealing, staff dealing and other responsibilities of teachers. He also talked about the motivational style of teaching and concentrating on co-curricular activities, especially sports. Teach your students how to think instead of what to think, he concluded. Later, certificates and souvenirs were distributed among the participants.
