This refers to the news report, ‘Technical education board now CM’s domain’ (August 8). This news is cause for concern because the PPP-led Sindh government is known for giving least attention to education. Recently, embezzlement on a huge scale has been unearthed in the department. This is the main reason for the steep decline in education standards.
There are about eight million children out of school while ghost schools abound in the province. Many schools have ceased functioning in rural areas because school buildings have been occupied by feudal lords and transformed into outhouses, cattle sheds or warehouses. Thousands have been hired for teaching jobs by creating fake vacancies. Unfortunately, all this has been taking place under the very nose of the chief minister. There are fears that technical education will now meet the same fate.

The majority of government departments in Sindh have been lying idle, impeding the progress of the country as a whole. Living in rural Sindh, I feel education is the least managed department in the province. The PPP government it seems is least concerned with the deteriorating education standards.
This department has become a political platform for feudal lords. School buildings are used as marriage halls. Billions of rupees of funds are being utilised on the personal interests of political figures. Teachers are being appointed on the basis of political influence without appropriate qualification and no additional training. We need to do justice with this department and make it work once again to the benefit of our country.
