Justice Hafiz Shahid Nadeem sought a report from the district coordination officer, Lahore (DCO) for arresting a butcher and detaining him for a month under 16 MPO on making speeches causing public disturbance or printing material against the government.
The judge directed the DCO to file a reply to the petition within four days. Petitioner counsel M Irshad Ch submitted that butchers should not be treated like political leaders and be detained under 16 MPO. The counsel said if there was any law, it should be exercised against the butchers for selling such injurious meat. He said that the butchers’ offence did not fall under category of making speeches or printing objectionable material against the government. Shaukat Ali, a resident of Gari Shahu, challenged the detention of his son Adnan. Petitioner counsel Irshad Ch submitted on June 9, the DCO issued one-month detention order of Adnan with many other butchers. He said the police arrested the petitioner’s son and sent him to Kot Lakhpat Jail. He said the allegation against Adnan was of selling unhygienic meat but was detained for the offences normally used against the political leaders. He submitted that even otherwise the recovered meat from Adnan was not sent to the laboratory for examination.
