According to media reports, over 1,200 people have died due to extreme heat and dehydration during the past few days in Karachi. Whenever a tragedy of such magnitude occurs anywhere in the country, the usual blame game starts. The fact is that Karachi has experienced an unprecedented period of heatwave. Temperatures went up as high as 46 degrees Centigrade. Also in view of a low pressure that developed over some parts of the Indian Ocean the south-westerly breeze that always keeps the city temperature under 40 degrees was not there.
There is a dire need to educate people for safety measures. There is also a need to provide safe drinking water at people’s doorsteps. I do not believe that the power outages had much to do in this tragedy. I remember a few years back many people died in France due to extreme heat. The temperature went up to 38 degrees Centigrade. There was no shortage of power in France. They just faced an unusual situation for which neither the government nor the people were prepared.
