It would be very difficult to hold local bodies (LB) elections in Sindh as per schedule as the delimitation process is still going on and the objections being filed in this regard will need time to be addressed.
This was stated by Sindh Assembly Speaker Agha Siraj Khan Durrani when asked on Monday whether the elections would be held on time.
Talking to The News in his chamber, he said the delimitation process was continuing these days, but people were not aware of their constituencies.
Durrani said objections to delimitation changes could be filed till the end of July, and disagreements over them would lead to controversy.
He said conducting a population census was essential before the LB elections as all people should be allowed to use their franchise, but the Election Commission of Pakistan had announced the census would be held six months after the polls.
Durrani stressed that the population census should be held at all costs before the elections.
Replying to a question, he said the Sindh Rangers director general had to give proof of Rs230 billion, which was allegedly collected in the province through illegal activities.
The provincial election commission has put on display the delimitation lists of 1,486 union councils and union committees of Sindh’s 29 districts.
The lists have been displayed at 231 designated centres and locations in the districts for public viewing for 10 days.
