KARACHI: The Ehsan Abbasi Memorial Pairs Bridge Tournament will be held here at the Aslam Bridge Hall, housed in the National Stadium, on Friday (today).
The tournament is being held in the memory of Ehsan Abbasi, a prolific bridge player and sports analyst, who passed away after protracted illness last month at the age of 79.
Ehsan had a passion for bridge throughout his life. He began his professional career with the Pakistan International Airlines and continued playing bridge during his long service at Kuwait Airways. He’s also reported to have played for the Kuwait national bridge team.
Back home, he was acclaimed as one of the finest exponents of bridge and he performed creditably in various tournaments, winning quite a few as well.
He used to take part in every major event organised in the city by the Karachi Bridge Association and the Pakistan Bridge Federation.
In the later stage of his life he was observed giving more time to bridge than any other activity and he was often found glued to his computer playing online tournaments.
He also used to coach younger players online. Lianna Swan, one of Pakistan’s leading women swimmers, is his granddaughter.
