This refers to the news item ‘Punjab raises salaries and perks of MPs, ministers’ (March 14). Pakistan is neck-deep in debt, but it seems that Punjab’s MPAs are oblivious to this.
The fact that the Punjab Assembly passed a salary increment bill is certainly not in line with the soul of Naya Pakistan. It may be pointed out that all government servants in Pakistan are given an increase of around seven to 10 percent in their annual salaries.
The low interest they take in their jobs is evident from the fact that some of them hardly attend assembly sessions.
However, the timely action of the PM has drawn appreciation from across the country. The MNAs and MPAs are people’s servants who should be ready to even work without pay.
