Two men were gunned down on Friday and another critically wounded in a firing incident in the New Karachi area.

Police officials said the incident took place when the victims were returning in a Suzuki Hiroof van after they had lunch at a restaurant in New Karachi. At least two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them, resulting in the deaths of 35-year-old Naseebullah and 40-year-old Noor Ali on the spot while 40-year-old Rafiq Noor was critically injured.

A contingent of police reached the site to collect evidence. According to SHO Khushhal Khan, the victims lived near the Fisheries and were also associated with a business in the fisheries harbour.

The officer added that the victims had come to the UP Morr area in New Karachi to visit their relative. They offered Friday prayers at Siddiq-e-Akbar Masjid near Nagan Chowrangi and had lunch at their relative’s hotel. It was while they were returning when at least two armed men on a motorcycle targeted them.

The police also claimed to have recovered at least five empty shells of a 9mm pistol from the crime scene. Police investigators suspect that the incident occurred over a personal enmity. No case had been registered till the filing of this story.

The incidents of drive-by shootings have recently increased in the city, signalling that targeted killings have again started to make their way into the city.

A scrap dealer was shot dead by unidentified men in the Shershah area on Wednesday. The body was taken to Abbassi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities and then handed over to the victim’s family for burial. According to SHO Inam Hussain, 22-year-old Shahzaib Khan was a scrap dealer and had come to visit his sister in Shershah when two men riding a motorcycle shot him multiple times and escaped.

The man died on the spot. A case was registered after the killing and the police suspected that the incident occurred over a personal enmity.

A 47-year-old labourer, Naik Muhammad, was also shot dead on Wednesday at his doorstep in outskirts of the city. Police officials said that the incident took place in the Chiragh Colony of Quaidabad within the limits of the Shah Latif police station.

The victim was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre where he succumbed to his injuries. Reacting to the information, the police reached the scene and inquired about the incident. According to the Khuldabad police check post in-charge, Asim Baig, the victim hailed from Mansehra and was a labourer. The incident took place when unidentified men knocked at the door of his house and when he opened the door, one of the assailants fired a shot at him and fled.

The family initially claimed that the incident occurred over offering resistance during a house robbery bid; however, the police suggested that the killing took place over a personal enmity.

Another incident of targeted killing took place on last Monday when a leader of the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP), who was also a member of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was gunned down in District Central.

The incident took place near Sarena mobile market in North Nazimabad within the limits of the Taimuria police station. Assailants on a motorcycle targeted Adeel Habib Khilji, son of Abdul Hameed Khan Khilji, who was passing there in his Parado.

Adeel was shot multiple times and died on the spot. His body was taken to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where, besides family members, a large number of PSP workers and leaders gathered and shouted slogans against the killing.

Police officials said the attackers used two weapons in their swift operation. They added that the police had seized nine empty shells from the site of the crime, seven of which were of a 9mm pistol and two of a .30bore TT pistol.
