MANSEHRA: The ruling Jamaat-i-Islami and its arch-rival in Tehsil Council Oghi couldn’t finalise names of their aspirants for the office of tehsil naib nazim for by-election because of the internal differences.
The Election Commission of Pakistan had annulled elections for the office of tehsil naib nazim held last month after none of the aspirants could secure the required 10 votes in 18-member council and announced fresh polling on February 26 this year.
The ruling JI had lost the elections to PTI, which could secure 9 votes, as four JI members crossed the floor and voted in support of PTI.
The seats in two union councils fell vacant after PTI councillor Nawabzada Fareed and naib tehsil nazim Zahidullah had tendered resignations to contest provincial assembly elections last year.
Fareed was elected to provincial assembly and Zahidullah lost to him in the general elections but a by-election in both the union councils are to be held.“We have our own system, which is run through district Shura and we can’t select our candidate on demands of our rivals,” Shakir Hussain, the district information secretary, told reporters. He said that soon the district Shura would decide on the name of its aspirant for the office of the tehsil naib nazim.
