Pakistani student honoured

KARACHI: A Pakistani student has won third prize at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the Physical Energy category, a statement has said on Saturday.
Habab Idress from the Dewaan Dayaraam Jethmal Sindh Govt Science College, Karachi received the prize for ‘Multi-Purpose Smart Solar Device’.
Intel Country Manager Naveed Siraj said Intel believes young people are the key to the future and to confront the global challenges, students from all backgrounds should get involved in science, technology, engineering and maths.
“We hope these winners will inspire other young people to pursue their interest in these fields and apply their curiosity, creativity and ingenuity to the common good,” he added.
Intel ISEF featured around 1,700 young scientists from 422 affiliate fairs in 75 countries. Approximately 600 finalists received prizes for innovative research, including 20 “Best of Category” winners, who each received a US$5,000 prize.
The Intel Foundation also awarded a US$1,000 grant to each winner’s school and to the affiliated fair they represent.
Other winners include Raymond Wang for engineering an air inlet system to improve air quality and curb disease transmission, Nicole Ticea for developing inexpensive testing device to combat undiagnosed HIV infection and Karan Jerath for refining and testing a device that recovers undersea oil well following a blowout.
