The Sindh High Court granted protective bail to former home minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza on Tuesday in a case filed against him for allegedly rioting and obstructing public servants from performing their duties.
The Arambagh police booked the estranged Pakistan People’s Party leader when he spoke to reporters after climbing atop an armoured personnel carrier outside an anti-terrorism court.
Police alleged that Mirza had forcibly climbed atop their armoured personnel carrier and delivered a speech wherein he had threatened their officers.
Arambagh SHO Alam Dahiri lodged FIR 191/2015 under sections 146, 147, 186 and 353 of the Pakistan Penal Code against him.
Mirza, who is already facing criminal cases for his alleged involvement in violence in the Badin district, moved the court for a protective bail in the fresh case.
The applicant’s counsel, Ashraf Samon, submitted that his client was booked in a politically-motivated case and he had committed no crime.
He added that Mirza had already been booked in fake criminal cases at the behest of the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.
He pleaded to the court to grant bail to his client so that he could surrender before the trial court as there were apprehensions of his arrest.
Justice Farooq Shah, after the preliminary hearing of the application, granted protective bail to the applicant till May 17, and also directed him to appear before the trial court.
Detention cases
The high court issued notices to the federal and provincial law officers to file comments on similar petitions filed by citizens, including government servants, against the detention of their relatives by the law enforcement agencies.
