Two suspected robbers were caught and burned alive by a mob on Saturday in Korangi after they killed an anti-car lifting cell police official for resisting a mugging attempt.
DIG East Munir Shaikh said ACLC official head constable Nasir Abbas was heading home from work when three men stopped him near a filling station in Korangi No 2 ½ and tried to rob him.
The ACLC official resisted and fired gunshots, injuring two of the robbers.
Abbas too was injured when the robbers fired back at him. He was rushed to a hospital where he expired.
The two injured robbers were beaten up by passers-by. Later, the enraged mob doused them with petrol and set them ion fire.
The DIG said the IGP had promoted Abbas to the
next grade posthumously for showing courage and gallantry as he had singlehandedly shown resistance to three armed robbers.
SP Korangi Afnan Amin said a police team led by Korangi SHO Khan Muhammad Shaikh rushed to the scene and tried to prevent the mob from killing the robbers. “But there were too many emotionally-charged people and they also beat up the policemen, including the SHO,” he added.
“The SHO suffered burn injuries on his hands when he tried to douse the flames on the robbers’ bodies.”
The official said the Korangi police were searching for the third robber who had managed to escape.
