The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has expressed concern and anguish over the pathetic and unhygienic conditions prevailing in Dhok Munshi Khan due to presence of cattle pens since long, making the lives of residents miserable.
The concern has been expressed after conclusion of comprehensive survey made by District Officer, EPA, Malik Muhammad Nawaz calling upon the related departments and their higher authorities for providing relief to the residents of the area from such unhygienic conditions which has spoiled the environment condition and is resulting in spread of dangerous diseases. This could be done by removing cattle dens established illegally by some people.
According to credible sources, the survey was conducted on the large complaints from the Principal and students of girls college as well as inhabitants of the area calling upon the authorities for action against the cattle owners as their milch animals are causing lots of problems and nuisances for them.
After completion of survey, Inspector Matloob Hussain, EPA has warned the existing cattle owners for keeping their milch animals in the populated residential areas and close to Government Girls College.
The survey report reads that arrangements have not been made for the proper storage and disposal of solid waste animal dung. Besides this report states that waste water is being discharged into environment without any Treatment, Filtration and Screening system.
Similarly, Environmental Management Plan regarding air, water, noise, solid waste, mitigations and safety measures not been submitted to EPA, Punjab. Moreover, entire atmosphere is being made obnoxious through foul smell and nuisance among the students of nearest women college and other inhabitants of said vicinity due to improper storage, heaps and disposal of solid waste of animal dung and obnoxious smell.
The EPA has also summoned the concerned cattle owners before the district officer, environment, Rawalpindi for enquiry and investigation purposes to get acquainted with the factual position.
The district officer, EPA, Punjab, Malik Muhammad Nawaz when approached informed that on directives by EPA, three cattle dens owners out of 10 have submitted reply. While the EPA has issued notices to remaining cattle dens owners to submit their replies with regard to illegal establishment of cattle pens by them. One week time has been given to the cattle owners for giving explanation, Malik Nawaz told.
To a question, he agreed that the related civic bodies and higher authorities in the city district government should take immediate action by removing cattle pens in order to provide relief to the citizens and to improve environmental and hygienic conditions in the area.
