Six suspected criminals, including four believed to be involved in target killings, were arrested by the East District police on Tuesday.
SSP East Pir Mohammad Shah said the Sharea Faisal police and the special investigation team conducted a joint raid at a hideout in Sharea Faisal and after a shootout arrested Syed Mohammad Zargham. He was found in possession of a sub-machine gun.
During interrogation, Zargham confessed to his involvement in 31 murders including that of three policemen.
In 2005, he had murdered jail superintendent Pir Shabbir Ahmed Sarhandi and a passerby Fahim Farooq near Ashfaq Memorial Hospital on University Road. Again that year, he had targeted an activist of a religious party in the same area.
He had also murdered a gambler and an activist of a political party in Liaquatabad and a young man in Liaquatabad No 10.
In 2006, Zargham and his associates had tried to target SSP Chaudhry Aslam near Punjab Chowrangi. In the attack, two police guards, ASI Mohammad Arif and head constable Nadeem Akhtar, were killed but SSP Aslam had remained unhurt.
In 2007, Zargham had targeted a traffic policeman near Lasania Restaurant on Sharea Faisal. He was also involved in the May 12, 2007 mayhem in the city and disclosed that he had murdered eight people that day.
