This refers to the news report ‘Motorway cop who fined the boss of his boss removed’ (Apr 25). The report reveals that Ziaullah, a patrolling officer in the Motorway police, was dismissed from his service after he fined the then chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA) for speeding. The fateful incident happened on April 29, 2016. The concerned officer was first transferred and demoted, and was finally shown the door for performing his duty honestly and boldly. It is the paradox of paradoxes. According to the report, instead of rewarding the officer for his principled stand, the high-ups taught him a lesson and made him an example for those who dared to punish the untouchables for violating the laws of the land.
It goes without saying that the incident will tarnish the image of a department that enjoys massive respect and support of people. In addition, the treatment meted out to Ziaullah will have a ripple effect and deter other officers to carry out their duties diligently and honestly. It merits a mention that any delays in justice amount to the denial of justice. It is hoped that after looking into this matter thoroughly, the officer in question will be given justice.
