Private schools, varsity fined for violating food safety standards

PESHAWAR: The teams of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority here on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs140,000 on three private schools and a university for unhygienic and poor food safety standards.

A communiqué said that taking strict action against schools for violating food safety and hygiene standards, Assistant Director Aneela Mahboob imposed Rs40,000 fine on a school for selling substandard and unlabeled food items.

It said that notices were also served on various schools and shops situated on the Warsak Road.

The official fined a private university Rs25,000 for unhygienic conditions at its canteen.

Assistant Director Saira Nisar fined a private school in Hayatabad Rs60,000 over unhygienic condition of drinking water and cafeteria.

Visiting Hayatabad, Assistant Director Saira Nisar took action against a school situated at Phase-III for violating food safety standards.

Another team comprising two Assistant Directors Asad Ali and Muhammad Abbas checked the canteens of a university and served improvement notices on the owners.

Action was also taken against a bakery for keeping expired items and improvement notices issued to a dozen of shops for violating food safety standards.

Similarly, in Dera Ismail Khan, the team visited different schools and colleges to raise awareness for banning carbonated, soft and energy drinks and low-quality snacks.
