The whole truth

March 23, 2018

After being on the run for two months, former SSP Malir Rao Anwar has finally surrendered before the Supreme Court. The public is still demanding answers, not just about Naqeebullah Mehsud’s murder but also about the scores of other extrajudicial killings Rao is said to have carried out – in the name of maintaining law and order. But the allegations levelled against him don’t just stop at encounters; there are some other serious crimes that he has been accused of committing.

Another high-profile criminal, Uzair Baloch, has been in the custody of the law-enforcement agencies since last year, but what has come out of his arrest – his trial is yet to begin. Much hue and cry was raised on the media about his criminal activities but nothing has been heard of him since his arrest. It is for the same reasons that the people have come to believe that nothing is going to come out of Rao Anwar’s JIT either. He is said to have the backing of some influential people. With such a poor record of prosecuting hardened criminals, people have lost all faith in the state’s institutions. What more evidence of a failed system do we need?
