Harassment in India

March 18, 2018

Indian security agencies have flouted international laws and repeatedly harassed Pakistani diplomats serving in New Delhi. Pakistan has protested against this unacceptable behaviour. The protection and security of the diplomatic mission is the responsibility of the host country.

The Pakistani people have also condemned this form of harassment. Pakistan should not let the matter go. It must ask the relevant department to look into this issue and take necessary steps to stop the harassment of Pakistani diplomats.

Disrespecting international laws and obligations, Indian forces have committed more than 400 ceasefire violations along the LoC and the Working Boundary since January. As if these violations were not enough to deteriorate the already strained relations between the two neighbouring countries, some elements in India have started harassing Pakistani diplomats and their families who are currently residing in New Delhi.

Contrary to the diplomatic norms of providing security to the diplomats, Indian authorities have ignored multiple requests made by Pakistani officials to probe into the matter. This laidback attitude makes the Indian government complicit in such despicable acts. This also nullifies Indian claims that the country is looking forward to peace and stability in the South Asian region. The unacceptable behaviour also provides a glimpse at India’s dual-faced policy of establishing good relations with the neighbouring countries. India should realise that, in the long run, creating war hysteria will not favour anyone. Mutual cooperation is the only way to maintain peace in the region.
