Rising imports
The alarming rise in import bill of edible items, including pulses, spices and dairy products is not only worrisome – given our imbalance of international trade – but also a matter of shame for an agricultural country. During every election campaign, our leaders vow that they will eat grass, but not accept aid or charity from any other country.
They promise that, if given power, they would rid the country of external debt and make it self-reliant. However, such claims and promises are without any substance and simply a farce for getting more votes during election. If they acted upon their promises, issues pertaining to balance of payment and circular debt would not be raised ever again. The Ministry of Finance should take solid steps to curb the huge influx of unnecessary imports and to increase exports to earn foreign exchange.
