Family alleges torture after prisoner dies
LAHORE: A prisoner died under mysterious circumstances in Camp Jail on Thursday. He was identified as Nazish of Lohari.
His family alleged that the jail administration had tortured him to death while the jail authorities claimed that he had committed suicide. Police shifted the body to morgue for autopsy to ascertain the cause of death.
PHP: Punjab Highway Patrol Additional IG Amjad Javid Saleemi presided over the ground breaking ceremony of the PHP provincial police lines at Jia Bagga, Lahore, on Thursday. Besides inaugurating the construction work on the police lines, the PHP additional IG also chaired the monthly performance meeting on the occasion. PHP DIG Ghulam Mehmood Dogar, Lahore SSP Babar Qureshi and other officers participated in the event.
The PHP additional IG said since its establishment 15 years back, the force had not its headquarters/Lines at the provincial level. He said that police lines, training centre, residences, police club, gym, rest house and other facilities would be constructed there. The construction of headquarters was a dire need of the unit, comprising 12,000 officials, he added. He stated that Punjab Highway Patrol had made the roads secure. Only two incidents of highway robbery occurred in 2017 in 11,000 km jurisdiction of PHP, he added.
Ghulam Mahmood Dogar stated that travellers had acknowledged that there was a dedicated force to help them in distress. He said the campaign to make the highways green had been successful. The performance of PHP Lahore SSP Babar Bakhar Qureshi, Gujranwala SP Shujat Ali Rana and Faisalabad SP Um-e-Salma was appreciated. Rewards and commendatory certificates were announced for the PHP personnel of Gujranwala, MB Din, Hafizabad and TT Singh districts. The PHP additional IG also announced distribution of Rs 10.5 million for repair of patrolling posts and directed the officers concerned to spend the funds honestly. He urged vigilant patrolling in the Katcha area.
OPC: Noted poet and writer Amjad Islam Amjad visited the office of Overseas Pakistanis Commission (OPC), Punjab.
OPC Vice-Chairperson Shaheen Khalid Butt and Commissioner Afzaal Bhatti told him that a comprehensive policy was being followed to resolve the issues of overseas Pakistanis and so far 60 percent of the complaints of overseas Pakistanis had been resolved amicably.
Amjad Islam Amjad said that establishment of OPC was a welcome step to resolve the problems of expatriate Pakistanis. accidents: At least 804 road accidents were reported to the Provincial Monitoring Cell of the Punjab Emergency Service/Rescue 1122 from all districts of the province during the last 24 hours Seven lives were lost and 516 people were badly injured in the road accidents.
