Asma Jahangir

February 14, 2018

The sudden death of prominent lawyer Asma Jahangir has deprived the country of its brave voice which couldn’t be silenced by even her strongest opponents.

This gallant human rights activist was a shining beacon that has left a legacy which will serve younger generations. Rest in peace, brave Asma Jahangir.

After the death of Asma Jahangir, many people on social media started to spread rumours in a futile attempt to degrade the deceased. However, nothing can change the minds of people who respect Asma for her tireless fight for the right. She worked for human rights and dedicated her life to help those who were victims of social injustice.

Asma Jahangir chaired the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan. Her role in the Lawyers’ Movement can never be forgotten. She will remain in hearts of the Pakistani people forever.

When the mighty and the powerful tried to bring her down, Asma stood like a rock. Not a single person could silence her brave voice which was heard by dictators, oppressors and the powerful who wanted to create hurdles in her path. When it came to justice, Asma stood for the right – even for those who opposed her struggle. She always spoke with confidence, in fact it was a treat to listen to her whenever she appeared on screen. She would fearlessly comment on court decisions and present her views in an unwavering manner. Her untimely death has created a big vacuum that can never be filled.

There are those who are overjoyed that the fearless Asma Jahangir is no more with us.

To such people, I say, “God forbid, but if one day you find a close friend or relative go ‘missing’, you will wish that Asma were there to fight on your behalf for his release.”

In a country surrounded by the powerful elite who find it beneficial to side with the forces of status quo, Asma Jahangir had the courage to stand up for what she believed in. She offered her services to thousands of women and members of minority communities to protect their rights. She also fought for those with whom she had ideological differences. This is because she believed that every citizen has a right to a fair trial.

Asma Jahangir was among a few who opposed Ziaul Haq and his misadventure in Afghanistan. She was critical of dictators for their policies which violated basic fundamental rights of citizens. She was a strong supporter of a modern democratic welfare state where every citizen would enjoy equal rights.
