Sugarcane growers
February 10, 2018
The federal cabinet’s meeting was held under the chairmanship of the prime minister on Tuesday (Feb 6). While talking about the issues being faced by sugarcane growers, the cabinet directed the provincial governments to ensure that sugar mills make prompt payment to farmers as per the official rate of sugarcane.
According to media reports, sugarcane growers all over the country are demonstrating over the payment of less prices of sugarcane than those fixed by the provincial governments for the 2017-18 crushing season. The governments must ensure that sugar mills purchase sugarcane at agreed upon rates. This will save poor sugarcane growers for whom sugarcane is an important cash crop from colossal losses.
