4 prime suspects held in Mithi double murder case

Police have arrested four prime suspects belonging to a ‘particular minority’ in the double murder case of two Hindu brothers in Mithi, Tharparkar.

Well-placed sources told The New that the police had arrested four prime suspects from Mirani Chandio tribe belonging to a minority community that has been declared non-Muslim.

Dileep, 41, and Chander, 38, were shot dead after being robbed in the main grain market on January 5. The incident threw the entire area in tailspin, as people from all walks of life poured out on the roads and streets to register protest.

The Sindh High Court (SHC) also took notice of the incident on January 8 directing the police to submit a progress report on investigation. Following the incident, the police authorities constituted a three-member investigation committee, comprising SSP Mithi Saud Zafar Magsi, SSP Umerkot Usman Bajwa and SSP Mirpurkhas Kamran Nawaz, and provided the team with the required technical support available with the Sindh police.

Area people blame that the criminals took advantage of unavailability of police, as they were guarding a public rally in neighboring Mirpurkhas district where the ruling PPP was holding a public rally.

The claim of area people was also supported by the civil society’s fact finding mission that visited the area on January 15 to probe the incident and submitted its report to the media and higher authorities.

Sources confided in The News that the local police had turned the incident into a jackpot by arresting some 150 people and releasing them after looting their valuables and pocketing heavy bribes.

Sources in law enforcing agencies confirmed that the police had arrested four prime suspects with the help of geo-fencing and technical and human intelligence.

Investigators are working on all possible aspects of the incident. SSP Tharparkar Saud Amir Magsi told The News that the police were working very hard. He said some of suspects were under custody and very soon the culprits would be arrested.

However, he refused to comment further as according to him at this stage sharing the details of investigation with media could affect the case. SSP Magsi refuted reports about unnecessarily arrests of innocent people and getting heavy bribes by the police.
