Mathews ruled out of BD tri-series

DHAKA: Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the ongoing tri-series in Bangladesh owing to a right hamstring injury. Mathews had been troubled by the injury since January 2017 and it flared up again during Sri Lanka’s 12-run defeat to Zimbabwe in their first game of the series. The problem kept him out of Sri Lanka’s game against Bangladesh - which they lost too - and it has now been confirmed that he will not take any further part in the competition.

Mathews’s absence will come as a major setback as Sri Lanka’s reign under Chandika Hathurusingha has started on shaky grounds. Hathurusingha quit his job as Bangladesh coach to take up the role with his home country and even brought Mathews back as the limited-overs skipper. Mathews had relinquished his leadership duties after the unexpected ODI series defeat to Zimbabwe late last year.

Since returning home early from the tour of South Africa in January last year, the Sri Lankan senior has grappled with a host of injuries to his calf, hamstring and ankle that has kept him out.
