Saving our children

January 19, 2018

It has become essential to talk about child abuse and raise awareness about the issue. We can also prevent children from getting abused by encouraging them to speak up about an incident. It is difficult to openly discuss these issues as it is considered a taboo in Pakistan. Even the most educated people hesitate to discuss this matter. As a result, the culprits gain the space to attack children without any fear.

Our country needs to put in its resources to address this issue. Suspending a few police officers or transferring them will not bring any improvement in our system. Protests and condemnations will also not have the desired effect. Only our wise decisions can change things. Several countries educate their children about sexual abuse and teach them how to protect themselves through the curriculum. It is imperative for Pakistan to include such education and self-protection exercises in its curriculum too. In addition, parents also need to make their children aware of the problem. Furthermore, Pakistan’s police department is incapable of handling child abuse cases. Such crimes can only be reduced if the police department is equipped with proper resources, equipment and training. They should be depoliticised and must be given a free hand to act against criminals. Moreover, the police and the government need to ensure the strict implementation of laws.
