Tragedy struck at Punjab University on December 13 when a girl was accidentally hit by a speeding bus of the Lahore Transport Company. She suffered from critical injuries and died on the spot. The incident raises a few pertinent points and an array of questions that need to be answered. First, is it enough to simply lament the ineffectiveness of our transport system or should we also point a finger at the authorities who have failed to repair moth-eaten roads and overhead bridges?
The accident was caused by the driver’s negligence. But would it be logical to simply protest for a day? The answer to this question is a resounding no. This issue demands a pragmatic approach that should not be influenced by emotions. The government needs to think about how it can prevent such accidents from occurring in future. The entire transport system needs to be revived. If this is not done with immediate effect, the consequences are likely to be gruesome.
