China backs Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital: spokesperson
BEIJING: China fully supports the establishment of an independent State of Palestine that enjoys full sovereignty, with East Jerusalem as its capital and based on the 1967 border.
This was stated by Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson Lu Kang while commenting on an extraordinary summit of the OIC held in Turkey that had called upon the international community to recognise East Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine.
“China understands the concern held by the Islamic countries over the status of Jerusalem. We support the settlement of this issue in accordance with relevant UN resolutions and international consensus. We hope that the negotiation between Palestine and Israel could be resumed at an early date so as to reach a comprehensive, fair and enduring solution to the Palestinian issue,” he added.
It had been stated earlier this week that China stand behind Palestine in building an independent, full sovereignty state along the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital. China called on all parties to remain committed to resolving disputes through negotiations and promoting regional peace and stability in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. According to spokesperson, China was paying close attention to the relevant development. He said, the status of Jerusalem is a complicated and sensitive issue.
