Career counselling: Questions and answers

December 05, 2017
Q1: I completed postgraduate in Sports Science and now I want to continue further studies in PhD Sports Management. Please guide me, which university is best for me. (Hassan Abdullah, Islamabad)
Ans: PhD or research is an important and complex decision to make. Though Sports Science and Management is highly emerging subject area you have to be careful when selecting your research in Sports Management so that you can utilise your research and contribute to the area or organisation that you serve.
The second point you need to consider is whether you wish to pursue your PhD in Pakistan or abroad? Unless I know your objectives I may not be able to recommend a university or destination that matches your requirement. However, let me assure you that there are opportunities in getting funding and scholarships going forward but it depends on various aspects such as your grades in your MSc, your English language proficiency. I hope that I have answered most of your concerns.
Q2: I’m a student of BBA and my 7th semester is in progress. Sir, I want to do MBA (Banking and Finance). I want to do MBA from Canada.
I have CGPA 2.8. Please guide me. (Muhammad Danish, Lahore)
Ans: While your choice for your masters in Banking and Finance seems to be correct; however, the course that you have selected is not the one that I would recommend. MBA in most universities abroad requires a minimum of three years of experience and furthermore you would need to really work hard in pushing your CGPA to reach three or above failing which you may have very limited choice of universities or institutions that will accept you in Canada but you will have to combine this with a high IELTS or TOEFL score. The suggestion, therefore, is to look at considering MSCS / MA in Financial Management or Accounting and Finance or Banking and Finance etc. However, you should keep all the above points in mind.
Q3: I want to do Aviation Engineering. I need your advice, my Matriculation marks are 648/850 and my marks in Physics, Chemistry and Maths are above 60 percent. Please tell me difference between Aviation and Aeronautical. (Noman Zahid, Karachi)
Ans: Aviation Engineering is an emerging discipline; however, you must be careful in understanding the definition. I think what you are looking at is Aeronautical or Aerospace Engineering and in this case you will need very strong maths and physics. However, if you are looking at Aviation Management or Aviation Operations and Technology then you look good with the marks that you have achieved in your Matric. Both areas need hard work and a number of universities in Pakistan and abroad offer these courses.
Q4: I have BS Aviation Management degree so I want to know flying is better or any scholarship is available in flying sector or management side any scholarship is available. (Ahsan Ali, Lahore)
Ans: Aviation Management is an interesting and important area. I think my advice to you would be to find a job for few years at an airport or with an airline before deciding whether or not you would like to train yourself as a commercial pilot. Please remember becoming a pilot is different than managing airport and aviation operations and its quite expensive to train yourself and get a CPL Licence.
