Disciplined nation

November 22, 2017
This refers to the article, ‘Individual as primary social’ (Nov 19, TNS) by Tahir Kamran. The writer’s description of Pakistanis cannot be any better. However, we must not forget that our national character is the product of our history. First, human development has suffered due to utter neglect in a feudal culture of our colonial past. Education and training required to transform social animals to law abiding citizens is not a priority in a feudal-dominated political system. Second, youngsters, by virtue of their very instinct, tend to be thrill seekers as they are full of energy. The system does not provide them an appropriate platform to channelise their energy in the right direction, by engaging them in productive and positive activities through systematic guidance. Therefore, the blame should rest elsewhere, not on young people, if they misbehave socially.
It reminds me of my recent experience during a visit to Istanbul, where I had the opportunity to visit one of the community centres that exist in every municipality. I was impressed to see the youth from the neighbourhood performing various sports and academic activities under guidance and supervision in a professional setting. I also visited an NGO that runs a network of youth hostels throughout Turkey as well in many Islamic countries for students at subsidised rates. Hostel occupants are provided qualified guidance and orientation to ensure strict discipline and good moral conduct. Building a disciplined nation is as simple as that.
